Discover Italy: A Vacation of a Lifetime
Getting Around Italy
Flying to Italy:
Most people who fly into Italy arrive in Rome's Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Another option for people who would like to fly into Rome is Ciampino Airport (CIA). People with travel itineraries to northern Italy may consider flying into Venice's Marco Polo Airport (VCE). People with travel plans to southern Italy may prefer flying to Naples International Airport (NAP). Feel free to click the image below as I share my flight experience to Italy.
Italy's Train System:
Italy's highly efficient train system is operated by Trenitalia. On their website, you can book single tickets, see current offers and deals, and view their trains. For travelers who prefer flexible traveling options, a flexipass is available that allows for unlimited traveling for a specific number of days in a two month period. Prices for these passes start at $179 for three days in a two month period. A full price list with options can be found here. Even with a flexipass, a seat reservation (additional fees apply) is required for many long distance trains.
Buses / Metro:
Major cities have city buses that run constantly. Tickets can typically be purchased at most news stands or small coffee shops. When you board a bus, you must validate your ticket in a machine near the driver or you will face a fine if caught with an unvalidated ticket or no ticket at all. You can purchase tickets to the use the metro in Rome at most news stands, small coffee shops, or underground at automated ticket machines before going through the turnstyle.
Venice Specific:
In Venice, transportation down the Grand Canal is accomplished primarily by Vaporetto (city water bus) or by private taxi. Prices for the Vaporetto depend on the length of the pass you buy. More information can be found here.
