Discover Italy: A Vacation of a Lifetime
Tips for Travelers Going to Italy
- Pack lightly, especially if you plan to visit multiple cities.
- Watch for pickpockets, especially in crowed areas where tourists gather.
- Dress appropriately if you plan to visit churches (cover your shoulders and knees).
- Bring good walking shoes, because you will need them.
- Carry small change. This is good for tipping and I experienced merchants not wanting bills too large for what I was buying (i.e. twenty euro bill for a two euro purchase).
- Book tours in advance so you can skip the lines to popular attractions.
- Ask locals for good places to eat. Also, don't be afraid to explore side streets for good places to eat. Often, restaurants near main tourist attractions are more expensive and provide lower quality food.
- Purchase a good guide book and bring it with you.

- To call home ask your cell phone provider about international calling plans or use Skype to avoid paying large fees for making an international call.
- If you visit Venice and want to buy a multi-day Vaporetto pass, purchase the "Rolling Venice" pass in conjunction with the Vaporetto pass. It's actually cheaper to purchase both than it is to purchase just a multi-day Vaporetto pass.
